Riverside- The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa

The Gist- This property started out as a very conservative 12-room, two story adobe boarding house. Construction began in 1876, by Christopher Columbus Miller, and he had originally called it the “Glenwood Cottage”. Frank Miller, Christopher’s son, took over for his father in the late 1800s and started this obsession with building the grandest hotel in the entire US. In 1902, Frank changed its name to the Mission Hotel. A year later, in 1903, the first wing of the hotel was opened; known as, what else, the Mission Wing! This wing had incorporated several architectural elements of the 21 missions throughout the state of California.

For the next 30 years, Frank Miller traveled the world looking for inspiration to grow his hotel. He constructed 3 more wings known as the Cloister Wing, the Spanish Wing and finally the Rotunda Wing. Construction, for Miller, was completed by 1931. The complex architectural styles as well as the changes in scales, make this unique hotel a one-of-a-kind. It is estimated that Miller spent roughly $5 million on just the artifacts alone, that he found on his journey around the world! Frank Miller passed away in 1935, and his daughter and son-in-law took over ownership of the hotel. Allis and DeWitt Hutchings managed the hotel until they both passed away in the early 1950s.

Over the next 30 or so years, the hotel went through several different owners. The Carley Capitol Group acquired the hotel and closed it for renovations in 1985 at the cost of $55 million. After they began reconstruction, they realized that there were much more severe structural problems then originally thought and were unable to complete the renovations. In December of 1992, Duane Roberts purchased the hotel and completed all renovations. He reopened the hotel a short time thereafter, and the hotel still remains in his ownership.

There have been several haunted reports of this hotel, by both guests and staff. Some of these claims include hearing whispering, strange lights, sounds of disembodied singing, guests report being touched, equipment malfunctioning, and ghostly apparitions have all been reported. HGC has not yet verified the paranormal reports at this location.
